A Student Council is a representative structure for pupils, through which they can become more involved in the life of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff and parents for the benefit of the whole school community.

Under the guidance of Mr. Mullen, Ms. Murtagh and Mrs. O’ Connor, the aim of the Student Council in Scoil Bhríde Buachaillí is to support and encourage the pupils to make meaningful contributions to decision-making within the school and also to enable them learn about how democratic processes work.

Generally two children from each of our 5th and 6th Classes are elected by secret ballot to the school’s Student Council. Successful candidates are appointed as council representatives for their class for the duration of the school year.

The Student Council usually meets several times throughout the year. The meetings are facilitated by a teacher with council representatives collecting ideas and suggestions for the agenda from each class ahead of each meeting. Suggestions are then discussed, prioritised and are brought to the attention of Mr. Sullivan and the staff.

This year the boys on the Student Council have been supporting the promotion of the Green Schools and the Amber Flag initiatives within Scoil Bhríde Buachaillí. The successful coordination of those programmes within our school has been greatly enhanced by the assistance and support of the boys sitting on this year’s Student Council.
